Lourdes, centro
de aguas francesas, famoso por las curas milagrosas, atribuido a la
Virgen María que en 1858 apareció en una gruta a Bernadette Soubirous. La
siguiente inscripción en la tabla de mármol registra la aparición:
“Fecha de las
18 apariciones y de las palabras de la Santísima Virgen en el año de gracia
1858”. En el hueco de la roca donde se ve su estatua, la Virgen apareció a
Bernadette Soubirous en 18 ocasiones, los días 11 y 14 de febrero, del 18 de
febrero hasta el 4 de marzo, luego el 25 de marzo, 7 de abril y 16 de julio.
La Virgen dijo
a la niña el 18 de febrero: “¿Me harás el favor de venir aquí todos los
días durante 15 días?”
"No prometo hacerte feliz en este mundo, pero sí
en el otro" La Virgen habló durante la quincena. "Yo quiero que venga
aquí mucha gente". "¡Pide a Dios por los pecadores! ¡Besa la tierra
por los pecadores!". "¡Penitencia, penitencia, penitencia!".
"Ve y di a los sacerdotes que construyan aquí una capilla. Quiero que
todos vengan en procesión". “Ve y bebe agua de la fuente y lávate en ella.
Ve y come de la hierba que hay.
El 25 de marzo la Virgen dijo: "Yo soy la
Inmaculada Concepción".
La aparición fue vista sólo por Bernadette, no fue un
evento objetivo y verídico. Hay un incidente posterior de carácter sobrenatural
en la vida de Bernadette que está relatado por el Dr. Dozous y que da
credibilidad a Bernadette y a él debe Lourdes principalmente su fama. Se cita
en el libro del Dr. Boisserie, quien da un resumen de las curas milagrosas
publicadas en los Anales de Lourdes desde 1868 hasta 1891. Orando en éxtasis,
la niña tenía los dedos entrelazados sobre la llama de una vela encendida. La
llama salió por encima de los dedos sin causarle ningún daño.
En la historia de las apariciones no hay ninguna
promesa de curaciones milagrosas, Bernadette era una niña con ataques y nadie
le habría prestado atención a sus visiones si no hubiera sido por la gruta de
rocas a la que el ángel blanco la condujo para que tomara el agua y se sintiera
más ligera y fuerte.
Un cantero de nombre de Bourriette fue el primero en
concebir la idea de que el agua en la primavera de la gruta, igual que el agua
que cayó en las manos desnudas de Bernadette, podría beneficiar a
sus ojos que fueron dañados por una explosión. Fue sanado y pronto se difundió
el rumor de que la Virgen María estaba realizando curas milagrosas. En el
volumen IX del SPR se publica un largo análisis de estos milagros por A. T. Myers, M.D., y F. W. H. Myers. Las
conclusiones fueron: "Muchas formas de psico-terapia se producen de manera
oscura pero natural, en la actualidad no hay mejores términos para definirlo
como sugestión o auto-sugestión, los efectos todavía no pueden ser explicados
por una u otra causa. La lista de curas es superior a otros lugares porque en
este hay un mayor número de pacientes tratados y además tienen una mayor
confianza en la curación. No hay ninguna evidencia real de la aparición de la
Virgen, sino más bien una alucinación subjetiva que no tiene más que una
conexión subjetiva con las curas."

French watering resort, famous for miracle cures, attributed to the Virgin Mary
who, in 1858, appeared in a grotto to Bernadette Soubirous. The following
inscription on a marble tablet records the apparition:
Dates of
the Eighteen apparitions and words of the Blessed Virgin in the year of grace
1858. In the hollow of the rock where her statue is now seen the Blessed Virgin
appeared to Bernadette Soubirous Eighteen times. The 11 th and the 14 th of February Each day, with two
exceptions, from February 18th till March 25th, April 7th, Vuly 16th.
The Blessed
Virgin said to the child on February 18th, Will you do me the favour of coming
here daily for a fortnight?
I do not
promise to make you happy In this world, but in the next I want many people to
come. The Virgin said to her during the fortnight. You will pray for sinners;
you will kiss the earth for sinners. Penitence! penitence! Penitence. Go and
tell the priests to cause a chapel to be built. I want people to come thither
in procession. Go and drink of the fountain and wash yourself in it. Go and eat
of the grass which is there."
On March 25th The Virgin said: I Am the Immaculate
Conception."
The apparition was seen by Bernadette
alone. There was no coinciding objective event which would make it veridical.
There is, however, a later incident of a supernormal character in the life of
Bernadette for which evidence is available in the testimony of Dr. Dozous to
whose advocacy the credence bestowed on Bernadette and the fame of Lourdes is
mainly due. It is quoted in Dr. Boisserie's book, Lourdes, which gives a
summary of the miraculous cures published in the Annales des Lourdes from 1868
until 1891. Praying in ecstasy the girl held her interlaced fingers over
the flame of a lighted taper. The point of the flame came out between the
fingers without causing her any harm.
In the story of the apparition there
is no promise of miraculous cures. Bernadette was an invalid child subject to
fits, and nobody would have paid attention to her visions but for the grotto in
the rocks to which she was conducted by the white angel, and the water of which
made her feel lighter and stronger.
A quarryman of the name of Bourriette was the
first to conceive the idea that the water of the spring in the grotto,
uncovered by Bernadette's bare hands, might benefit his eyes which were injured
by an explosion. He was healed and the rumour soon spread that the Virgin Mary
was effecting miraculous cures. In Volume IX. of the S.P.R. a long analysis is
published of these miracles by A. T. Myers, M.D., and F. W. H. Myers. The
conclusions are: "Many forms of psycho-therapeutics produce, by obscure
but natural agencies, for which at present we have no better terms than
suggestion and self-suggestion, effects to which no definite limit can yet be
assigned. Thus far Lourdes offers the best list of cures; but this superiority
is not more than can be explained by the greater number of patients treated
there than elsewhere, and their greater confidence in the treatment. There is
no real evidence, either that the apparition of the Virgin was itself more than
a subjective hallucination, or that it has any more than a merely subjective
connection with the cures."
